When to throw an egg in church.

Egghead_batmanIn medieval times, a festival of ‘egg-throwing’ was held in church. The priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys, and then tossed from one choir boy to the next. When the clock struck 12, whoever held the egg, was the winner and got to keep the egg.

Quadrantid meteor shower tonight.

This is one of the least studied meteor shower, because it happens on a very cold night every year. You should be able to see about one “shooting star” per minute starting around 1:00 a.m. EST. So if you did not get what you wanted for Christmas you can make your wish tonight on a falling star. Look for the meteors to radiate from the end of the Big Dipper’s handle to the head of Draco the Dragon.

Asteriod Discovered 12/09/12 Fortells Doomsday 12/21/12?

Two Asteroid Earth Flybys this week.

This week the buzz is about a newly discovered asteroid  about 100ft long narrowly missing the Earth. It whizzed by close. Half the distance of the Moon’s orbit. This coincides with another known close asteroid passing by named Toutatis (“The Sky is Falling Asteroid”). What’s more a new meteor shower is being predicted this week to occur radiating out of Pisces during the same time as the annual Geminid meteor shower. The prediction is that we should see about 130 shooing stars an hour on the night of Dec 13th and 14th.

Doomsday Predictions: Here They Come!

This surprise asteroid discovery did not give us much of a warning to see it pass by and could have been on a collision course. The doomsayers are saying that this is just the first of many that will arrive on the last day of the Mayan Calendar date of 12/21/12. Coincidence?

Enjoy the meteor shower show  and don’t worry be happy.

Spot Mercury, Venus and Saturn!

Mercury, Venus and Saturn

Mercury, Venus, Saturn and a crescent moon

Mercury, Venus and Saturn

I plan on waking early before dawn to look up in the eastern sky to see these three planets at once. I hope the  clouds will be gone. The brightest is Venus and will be easy and obvious to spot. Below Venus and hugging the horizon will be Mercury. Above Venus will be Saturn and above Saturn will be a crescent moon. You will not need a telescope or binoculars.

The Geminid Meteor Shower

The planets were named by ancient astrologers who called them wandering stars and had no idea that they were planets, because the concept of planets was unknown until Galileo’s time. For the next several early mornings the moon will be lower in the sky. Sliding down night by night until it disappears below the horizon leaving a dark moonless night. This is fortunate for us, because we will be able to see the Geminid meteor shower on Dec 12th thru the 15th which will peak the night of December 13 until dawn December 14. This is usually the best time to wish on a falling star, because you will probably see one or two every minute. You will see the meteors anytime after dark, but the best viewing time will be about 2 a.m. I’ll blog more about the Geminid meteor shower, but for the next few days if the sky is clear enjoy being able to identify Mercury, Venus, Saturn and read my previous blog on Jupiter to see four planets in one night!

We Live in a Low Interest Rate Bizzaro World

The Lowest Interest Rate of Our Lifetime

I was in the bank and their posted 10 yr CD (certificate of deposit) low interest rate was only  1.01% I can’t imagine anyone locking up their money for ten years for this low interest rate. This low interest rate environment we live in was never predicted by any prognosticator. The huge government deficit and debt forces the Fed to keep low interest rates around for a long time to come, because we can’t afford to pay the interest on the public debt.

This Low Interest Rate is Tough on Savers

Savings accounts are paying such a low interest rate that it has no impact on your personal wealth building plans. Money Market accounts and CD’s have traditionally been a safe place to get a return on your money without worry of loss,  but today’s low interest rate will not even keep up with inflation. Many of my clients tell me of how they use to take the 5% or 6% return on their CD money and spend it on vacations or a home improvement project each year. Over the past few years they have not received this income and they are not taking vacations or they are dipping into their savings nest egg.

Bonds are Risky in a Low Interest Rate Environment

Many people are buying bonds to receive a higher return. Over the decade a lot of money has been made in bonds, because as interest rates plummeted bond values soared. Interest rates can’t get much lower being as close to zero as these low interest rates already are, but a slight increase in rates will hurt bond values making bonds a risky investment. Bond traders have been on quite a ride and I don’t hear Wall Street warning about the coming bond crash as interest rates inevitably inch upward.

This bizzare low interest rate environment requires a new kind of thinking for safe low risk returns.

The stars are out tonight.

Jupiter is very visible tonight. I looked to the east just after dark and low in the sky was the big bright light of Jupiter. Please experience the joy and self satisfaction of naked eye planet spotting. Teach your children and astound your friends. Jupiter continues to rise all night and then set in the west, because it is in opposition. Get up early and in the morning before sunrise see Jupiter low in the western sky.
